Oh Gorgeous Baby - We find lots of lovely things

Happy Anniversary Babe, 14 years today!

Today I just wanted to share that I am celebrating a pretty big milestone with my husband.  Today is the day we met all those years ago and when this whole story started.  It was a chance meeting for us in a gorgeous little beach town and it still feels like yesterday. Two very different people yet somehow it just seems to work.  It's been 14 years today since I meet him for the first time, a Christmas party where I got the best present ever ...him!  We both grabbed a hold of each other and never let go. Okay I didn't do that as soon as I seen him but don't think it didn't cross my mind. We got to know each other first but you get what I mean.  6 years later to the day we married in that gorgeous little beach town that brought us together and had the best time of our lives. This town holds a very special place in our hearts and one day we hope to buy a holiday house there.
Now he has been my husband for 8 years and we have 3 beautiful children. Our children have been our life for the past 11 years and it has taught us so much. Life throws us curve balls but we are always there to catch them together and that's why as Airlie would say I love him to the moon + 6!!
I just want to say Happy Anniversary babe. Some days I forget to tell you how much I appreciate you and everything that you do. You are by far the best man that I know, so thank you for everything that you do for us. Love you xx Tonight we are going out for dinner for the first time in a very long time thanks to our wonderful Cheree. We are a little out of practice when it comes to this sort of thing but I am sure we will be fine! Have a great day everyone and remember to tell the person you love how much they mean to you.

Meeting Princess Mary

Ever since Prince William and Kate Middleton married my 5 year old daughter Airlie Fae has become fascinated with Royal families. I guess like lots of little girls she adores all princesses but her school also helped foster this love by teaching her all about The Royals.   The class named their class pet stick insects William, Kate & Harry and they have also written letters to Kate & William for their wedding. They also the Queen and Airlie was very excited when she received a special letters back from Buckingham Palace.
In the lead up to Kate and William wedding Airlie wanted to know why she wasn't invited? and when the Royal Wedding day arrived we  threw a little High Tea  to celebrate. Unfortunately when the Queen came to Australia we both really wanted to attend but didn't make it, I now wished I had of tried a little hard to attend because it would make an incredible memory.

That is why when Princess Mary announced she was coming to Australia and to Melbourne I promised Airlie Fae we would defiantly go and see her.

It was a gorgeous day and after picking the kids up from school early we headed in to see if we could catch a glimpse of the gorgeous Princess Mary. Airlie and I picked some flowers from our garden and Airlie drew a picture for Mary. The picture was of Airlie and Princess Mary in the sunshine and Airlie was handing some flowers to her. When we arrived at ArtPlay there were quite a lot of people and I was worried that we had missed the event! Luckily we hadn't so we waited patiently with other members of the public. Some lovely ladies let Airlie stand by the fence and I  was just behind her.

At almost 3pm Princess Mary arrived and the crowd erupted as she and her husband Prince Fredrick wondered around the crowd accepting flowers and gifts. As she made her way towards us we became very excited! As soon as Princess Mary seen Airlie she approached her as if she was someone she knew. I took as many pictures as I could of her coming towards us but because we were upon the fence I didn't have any room to take any pictures of them together. I also became incredibly star struck and a little teary as I watched Mary with Airlie as she took the time to speak with my daughter. Princess Mary asked her what her name was and pronounced it correctly! (we often get Ellie or other combinations) The Princess also asked Airlie about the picture she had drawn for her and was so lovely as she listened to Airlie tell her all about it. I was incredibly proud of Airlie as I watched her with Mary and was overcome with pride. When Mary stood up she greeted me and shook my hand! I thanked her so much for taking the time to speak with Airlie and then remembered I should have been taking photos!

Here is the video that was featured on the Herald Sun where Airlie is captured giving Princess Mary her picture and flowers. Airlie is wearing a green and pink coloured dress 24 seconds into the clip. Sadly I haven't come across any pictures of Airlie that were taken by the media but if anyone sees any please let me know. I did tweet Hearld Sun the day after the event but did not receive a reply. If you have any other ideas as to how to get a hold of his footage or pictures please let me know.

After Princess Mary was inside ArtPlay Airlie was interviewed by a raido station regarding meeting the Princess. After Princess Mary was gone we went to play in the park near by, we then grabbed an ice-pole and headed back to the car. All in all it was a fabulous day  that we will remember for years to come.
Thank You Princess Mary for taking the time to talk with Airlie you will be forever adored by us.

Doing something like this is a priceless way to make a family memory. We are forever going to remember this day and I am so glad that I made the effort to take my 3 kids along.

Asher Keddie shares all with The Australian Woman’s Weekly

This post is Sponsored By Nuffnang

For those of you that don’t know, I ‘m a huge Asher Keddie fan.  I’m completely addicted to the show Offspring and like many Australian women; I adore her character Nina Proudman’s fashion sense. I also feel fortunate to have watched Asher’s portrayal of Ita Buttrose in Paper Giants: The Birth of Cleo, and for giving us another insight into Blanche d’Alpuget in the tele-movie “Hawke”. I know there are many other roles Asher has starred in, but these are just the recent roles that have turned me into an adoring fan. All of these shows have been successful and her performances have been outstanding not just for me, but for Australian TV too.  I find watching her act a real treat because she makes me forget about her previous characters she has played and introduces you to new ones. This is something that I suspect is not easy when you become so widely known for a particular role.   This is why I was really excited to see the front cover of Australian Women’s Weekly with a gorgeous photo of Asher, dressed to die for as usual! I grabbed a copy not only because I wanted to find out what she was wearing, but also because I wanted to learn more about the woman who has successfully depicted so many Australian women across various roles in television, plus the headline Asher Keddie “I don’t need babies to be a success” (and yes, she did play Ita!) also had me intrigued too.

The article sets the scene where in one of their meetings, Ita Buttrose and Asher Keddie are at a chic restaurant in Sydney‘s Surry Hills. This was taking place just a week out from the filming of the ABC mini-series Paper Giants: The Birth of Cleo.  Asher was just about to embark on a role where she embodies Ita and plays the most amazing role that had Australia talking about the fashion, women’s roles in the work place and of course, Asher’s performance.  Australian Women’s Weekly  article really gave a great insight into Asher and Ita’s relationship which I found entertaining. It showed even though Asher is a big star within her own right, she was still acutely aware that she was in the presence of a household name and acted accordingly by perspiring (just like any of us would I suspect).  I love how Ita shared that after the show was finished filming she once found herself believing she was imitating Asher Keddie while walking. That to me pretty much sums up just how good Asher was in that role.   I thought it was definitive of Asher’s own character when she was told of Ita’s comment her own response was “How funny is that?” I think that gives a fairly good reason to adore her.   Asher shared how she spoke with and observed Ita but how she didn’t actually practice the iconic Ita Buttrose lisp before filming, instead she preferred to wait until filming had started not letting it go before, during or after work, perfecting it to what we heard on screen.  Her husband Jay also shared how Asher would hold herself differently and he would know she was still in character. This gave me a new appreciation for acting and how Asher herself likes to inhabit her characters.

Asher also shared that playing Blanche d’Alpuget in TEN’s critically acclaimed tele-movie “Hawke” has been her hardest role to date.  Asher found like most of us that she only knew what the media has told her about Blanch and she learnt how very one sided it had been.  I appreciated how Asher chooses not share the intimate details of conversations she had both with Ita and Blanche. All she would say was that she found Blanche to be very courageous when sharing her feelings about Bob Hawke and that such discussions between her and people like Ita and Blanche were private.

Thanks to this interview in Women’s Weekly Magazine, I also know a whole lot of new and interesting things about Asher. For Example, did you know that Asher was named after English Actor Jane Asher? She was and her parents also chose to name her sister Bronte after 19th Century sibling writers Charlotte, Emily and Anne Bronte. I also learnt that Asher was inspired to act after watching Meryl Streep and that one of her favourite movies is Kramer Vs Kramer.  Asher shared that she adores anything French which was strongly stated in her outfit during one of the interviews. Asher wore blue jeans and black boots, a black vintage-style jacket and an ivory coloured Rodeo Show blouse that would do any woman proud on a Parisian sidewalk. The pictures displayed throughout this article are just simply stunning; Asher is dressed in beautiful outfits and was pictured several times with a gorgeous white horse on her property that she shares with her husband and 5 horses in the Macedon Rangers in the shadow of Hanging Rock Victoria.

During the interview Asher described herself as a free-spirited – make that wilful – child. I loved the story where Asher tells us about her 4 years old self wanting to wear her mother’s wedding dress with an enormous train to Safeway to go shopping.  She tells how people were either laughing or disapproving of her as the dress was in tatters, but how much she really loved her Mum for that – how her mother always allowed Asher to express herself in the way that Asher wanted to.  This really made me think about how I could be a little more like this with my own kids.  Asher also shared how she loved to role- play from a young age and how she pretended to be adults she knew.

Throughout the article it is also quite evident that her actor and lead singer husband Jay Bowen and Asher clearly adore each other. In this article Jay describes a scene that Asher filmed in busy Taylor Square Sydney for Love My Way and how she pushed all boundaries because it wasn’t about being pretty or about her ego.  Asher describes Jay as an awesome showman, part Michael Hutchence, and part Freddy Mercury.

I really wanted to hear what Asher had to say on the subject of kids as the headline Asher Keddie “I don’t need babies to be a success” (and yes, she did play Ita!) had caught my attention.   Asher admitted when asked about children (usually by other women) it can sometimes feel judgmental and offensive. At 37 she feels successful and asked why were we only considered successful if we can juggle family and a demanding career?

I had my kids early so I have to admit that I don’t know what that must feel like, but I am sure it would be really annoying if you are trying to have a career.  Asher candidly shared that It’s wasn’t that she thought she couldn’t do it, but more that she wasn’t sure. She admitted that there is a selfish part of her and a very giving party as well, and that she is very aware of who she is which leads her to the I don’t know part. I really loved her honesty as women are often scorned for choosing to have their careers or to not have children at all.

I would love to hear what you think about women not being treated as being successful unless they juggle work, career and family.

Red Poppies, Remembrance Day & Tattoos

I always like to know the stories behind traditions, it's a bit of a fascination I have and I guess it is just my way of trying to connect with it. That is why today I decided to investigate a little bit more about why we wear red poppies. It is actually quite an interesting tale so please just take a few moments to read, I also learnt along the way that many people display the poppies upon their bodies to be a constant reminder. Please read with me and remember our fallen soldiers.

To me wearing a red poppy on Remembrance Day was important for a couple of reasons, 1. it is a way of fundraising for the families of fallen soldiers and 2. it is a sign of respect for those who have served us both in our past, present and for those who have fallen doing so. Today as we watch TV, listen to the radio or read stories online via Twitter, Facebook, Blogs and New Media sites you will most probably see a story about Remembrance Day and you should see those people wearing a red poppies. Days like this always make me feel a little bit sad but really bloody lucky that I have had men like these who have stood before my time to protect our country or help others protect theirs. To some I am sure that the red poppies are just another type of flower you can grow in your garden or as I learn get tattooed on your body, but to Australian's and many other countries who have fought in wars the Flanders poppy is the flower of Remembrance Day. This flower marks Armistice of 11 November 1918, when the two fighting parties decided to temporarily cease fire. We are also increasingly seeing the flower used across ANZAC Day too

During WWI red poppies were said to be the first thing that appeared on the battlefields in North France and Belgium. The folklore of Soldiers tells us that the red colouring comes from the blood of their fellow soldiers. In 1915 Lieutenant Colonel John McCrea wrote a poem  In Flanders Fields.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
Until this poem was written poppies were known for either sleep or a state of oblivion, but now it stands for sacrifice and as many diggers say for their mates lost at war and since coming home from its affects. I always have heard to that many also say it is all about future as well.

The story goes that the poem was read by one Monia Micheal an America YMCA employee, who then decided to wear a red poppy as a way of always keeping the faith. She then discussed the poem at a YMCA secretaries meeting  of countries around the world in November 1918, this is where the French secretary Anna Guérin decided to raise money for soldiers and their families.
Here in Australia our first poppy was sold in 1921 by The Australian Returned Soldiers and Sailors Imperial League after it was accepted by allied nations for the flower to be worn on Remembrance Day. Today poppies are also widely seen in wreaths on Anzac day, this traditional started when at at Dawn Service in Palestine in 1940 soldiers put poppies on the Stone of Remembrance as they marched passed. A Senior Australian Officer also layed a wreath of freshly picked poppies. We also see the poppies placed on the Roll of Honour as a personal tribute to the fallen soldier, this began after the funeral of an unknown Aussie solider was laid to rest on 11 November 1993. As members of the public waited to lay a flower on his tomb  they stood along the Roll of Honour and placed their poppies along side soldiers names.

So to those Diggers today past, present and fallen Thank You for protecting us. War is something that is hard to understand a lot of the time and I know everyone has their own personal opinion on it. I do feel though that with out these good men and women things could be very different today. I don't think you need to support a war to support your soldiers and their families so if you agree please go out there and buy some poppies and wear them and remember why we do it. I have several friends who are in several areas of the Australian Forces and I especially wanted to say thanks to them today and Thank You to their families too.
My husband Metal dad australiA wrote this today on his  facebook and I thought it was worth sharing. By the way if you haven't checked out his blog or his facebook page please go and support my man.
Today is remembrance day, a day to reflect on the sacrifices past
generations have made for our generations! Support the troops
and their families, not the politicians and religious leaders
creating wars.

The Kids Review The uDraw

If you read my blog, visit my facebook page or read my tweets you may know that recently  my family was given the opportunity the trial the uDraw. I have shared some pictures and made some updates along the way and now I thought I would share a full review of the product.

I was lucky enough to attended a function with THQ and PORTER NOVELLI and was then asked to trial the product to give an honest opinion.  Since we currently own a Xbox 360 and as the uDraw is not available till Nov/Dec 2011 on the Xbox we were also given a Wii on loan too. I told the kids and after they finished jumping up and down I also explained that a loan mean we did have to give it back, they didn't seemed fazed and thought 'they' (those people are THQ & PORTER NOVELLI) were really nice for letting us share their stuff!

It actually couldn't have came at a better time and I really appreciated  the chance to trial the product as it was just the beginning of the school holiday.  Like most Mums I was wondering how I was going to keep the kids occupied for 2 weeks?!  Both Mason (11) and Airlie (5) were keen to trial the uDraw and until it arrived I had both of them asking me when it would?   When it arrived we set it up which was really easy, after negotiating who would go first we tried some drawing. Airlie spent the most time using the uDraw and drawing free hand so I thought I would ask her what she thought of it.

What the Kids Think

Mum: Airlie,  what did you like about the uDraw?
Airlie (5): I liked being able to use all the tools that the uDraw had. It was like having a big pencil case that was full of stamps, paint and  chalk in  lots of colours. I really liked the uDraw because I love to draw and colour in. I liked how you could choose the type of background like a blackboard, paper or cardboard to draw on.  I also liked how it had colouring in pages as well,  if I didn't want to draw I could colour in.
I  really liked playing Pictionary with my family as it was lots of fun. We laughed a lot when we tried to guess each others drawings. I would like to see fairytale pictures to colour in as I love them.

Mum: Mason what did you like most about the uDraw?
Mason(11): I liked how you can free draw and be creative on the uDraw.  I found once I got the hang of using the tools and the pen I found it really easy to use. I also liked how we got to trial the game Pictionary, I really enjoyed playing this with my family.  I would like to see uDraw include WWE, NBA & AFL stars that I could colour in as I am interested in these things.

Mum's Thoughts.
As a Mum it was great to see my kids getting creative. Airlie loves drawing anyway but this was just adding a new aspect to her creativity. Mason didn't spend as much time on the unit free drawing but then he is a NBA crazed boy who as very specific interests these days. He does also like to draw and I think if we had this in our home all the time he would pick it up and play with it after he's had a go of his NBA game though.
I liked how you could save the pictures and then print, share or email  the pictures. I wish I had of had Airlie draw me a Christmas picture as it would have been the perfect front to our Christmas cards.
I would like to see the function of saving the replay of the picture being drawn too as Airlie loved watching this. Maybe some how to's on drawing certain characters or objects would also be a great addition to the tablet as well.  As a family we spent several nights playing Pictionary together and had lots of fun. We played in 2 teams and usually did the Junior Clues because Airlie is only 5. The game allows up to 4 teams and you can choose from Adult or Junior clues. It was funny trying to pick what your partner was drawing and I would see this a great game to play with friends and family of all ages. I would love to play this game with my Dad as I think it would be hilarious! We spent one Christmas playing Charades with him and the rest of the family and I don't think I have ever laughed so much.  I think one of the great thing about having the uDraw was everything was contained within the system so we had no worries with trying to find missing pieces or set up pieces of the game like your regular board game. This product is retailing now for approx $120 and is on the list for Christmas in our house.

Oh and check out my awesome masterpiece below. I know I am no Picasso or Michelangelo but it was still cool playing with the kids.

Thanks very much to THQ and PORTER NOVELLI for the opportunity to review the uDraw and for also loaning us the Wii so we could participate.

If you have a product you would like us to review please get in touch.

Party Styling & The Melbourne Cup Our Way

So most of you know that yesterday was the annual running of the Melbourne Cup here in Australia and what a race it was! The winner Dunaden just nosed Red Cadeaux out of the win  and 9 Lucas Cranach come in third. I didn't get to place a bet on the big race but I was cheering on Red Cadeaux as the jockey Micheal Rodd is an ambassador for Zaidee's Rainbow Foundation. I think that may have been the closest horse race in history and defiantly had people jumping up and down (then usual).

Unfortunately I have never been along to the Melbourne Cup but would love to go along to this magnificent day or one of the other race days.  This year I decided to have a little party of our own at home with the family while we watched the race. Airlie was very excited to help me put together a little table and to help me cut out some Melbourne Cup Printables designed by Pretty&Print.

Here we are having some fun with our Melbourne Cup Photo Booth Printable. Aston pretended to be a horse then eat the printable! Airlie was a jockey, Mason was a gentleman punter and then Airlie and I both pretended to be horses.

We had lots of fun dressing the table with loads of colour, we also served little sandwiches and freshly baked scones (by my gorgeous husband), they were topped with passionfruit curd, chocolate spread, strawberries and freshly whipped vanilla cream. YUM! I decided to style the table with a plain white table cloth I own, some gorgeous white and pink roses from our garden and  Mydrap a lovely . The product brought a lovey splash of colour to my table and really brightened it up which added to the fun of our day. I am on the look out for Mydrap for Christmas and I think they would also be a great birthday party addition as well to keep in my party box.  You can see my table setting below and if you would like more details on this product please check out the end of this post.

What did you get up to for Melbourne Cup? Did you buy a new frock and do your best at fashions on the field? Did you attend a fancy lunch? Plan your own party? or did you stay home?

Airlie wanted to dress up so I decided to as well. I am wearing a black dress by TEMT and my shoes are from Tony Bianco & Airlie is wearing a dress by ALEX&ANT  & her shoes are from Target.

I love doing this sort of thing with my family. I often use to see other people blog about doing things like this and would think they had way too much time on their hands. Truth is they were just make the time and putting in the effort to do it and I am so glad I am now too!

I hope you enjoyed this post as much as I loved sharing it!!
